Two suppliers can quote 12 pos and still deliver different parts because position count does not define contact assignment, insert keying, or body molding. Custom 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 12 position layouts are engineering options built to your pin map, so the pin map needs to be clear enough for a hybrid connector manufacturer to price.
1. Pin map and circuit function. List every position, identify the signal or supply it carries, and mark spares as spares. For bus interfaces, name the differential pair and ground explicitly. A 12-position layout with three ambiguous pins will return as a question instead of a quotation.
2. Electrical duty per contact. Provide rated voltage and current for each contact rather than one system figure. For an M12 distributor rated 250V AC/DC and 4A, this information shows the contact system and spacing the design needs and whether a pin has enough headroom within the insert.
3. Coding, keying, and locking. State A-coding or D-coding, the anti-rotation key position, and the thread-locking requirement. M12 thread locking is part of the mating interface, so include it in the drawing notes before sampling.
4. Interface derivative and mechanical format. Decide whether the design needs an M8 adaptation for a smaller branch, a straight or 90° cable exit, a panel-mount front, or a molded harness end. M8 derivatives are engineered adaptations matched to the M8 interface family and follow the same drawing review as the M12 body.
With those four blocks in one document, the supplier can evaluate tooling, contact system, overmold, and sample effort together. That is also when a hybrid connector supplier can say whether the request is a straightforward derivative or a new mold program and quote on that basis.
